Cramond

Riding along the streets here is a bit dicey in some places although it's okay for bikes to use the bus lanes. There are also some streets with designated bike lanes and there are some very nice pedestrian and cycle paths to go further afield.
On Sunday we all went for a long bike ride out to and along the waterfront in Leith up to Cramond (despite the rain). We found while in a tea house that this place was once occupied by the Romans - the cafe showed a picture of the Romans in this location. As well there was a little island that served as a lookout in WWII for German submarines. One of the locals told us that at high tide the water rises 15 feet so some walkways that are accessible at some points in the day are completely covered in water at other times. The pathway along the shores of the North Sea is wide and great for cycling and walking. There are many open grassy areas, sandy and rocky shoreline and shells all over the pathway. We stopped for a scone and tea at a cafe on the River Almond. There are boats tied up here and this river runs into the North Sea. The river moves so fast I'm unsure how a person even gets onto their boat without being swept away. While we were there we were treated to a beautiful site. A herd whiteness (term for group of swans I found on the internet) of about 15 swans was swimming along the banks of the river - this is one of those times I wish I had my camera.
