Earth Day / Beltane celebrated outdoors!
Harriet is really busy writing papers but Harrison had Monday April 21st off of school (public holiday here) so after teaching yoga Sunday morning I took the boys on the train to Markinch and we went camping overnight in a tent. We walked into a caravan park located on the edge of Balbirnie Park. After setting up our tent and a short break, we hiked to the far end of the park and to a stone circle dating back to its construction 5000 years ago (circa 3000 BC)! We discussed the stone circle in relation to its date at the same time that Egyptians began to build pyramids. We learned together about the stone circle and nearby henge being used for ritual and burial purposes and considered it in relation to the Stonehenge site we visited last autumn. It seemed quite appropriate in relation to Beltane (the pagan celebration this time of year) to tent and hike this weekend ... also since it was Earth Day (April 21st) when we woke up outdoors the next morning. Also of interest (maybe), we found a dead hedgehog along the edge of a road in the park and spent some time looking at its anatomy and amazing quills. Harrison was also quite fascinated with a centipede-looking creature we found at the campground.
